Twitter Confirms Premium Account Rumors, Could Have Actual Revenue Stream
Twitter, the micro-blogging service that has spawned a language that gives Snoop Doggs late-90s izzle-based language a run for its money, has confirmed long-circulating rumors of offering pro and premium paid accounts.Brands, companies and individual users will now be able to purchase pro and premium accounts, which will range in price from $10-20 for the first tiers and upwards of $100 dollars for the premium level. The key differences between the paid accounts and the free accounts available to everyone will be their tool sets. Analytics for a company or individuals Twitter pages, as well as enhanced tracking features to see what people are saying about the premium accountholder.
Other features will likely be announced as the service rolls out. Twitter will continue to be free for everyone, companies and individuals alike. The premium services are, more or less, ad-on applications and features for improved use.
The service could silence critics that have, perhaps rightfully, taken issue with Twitters lack of revenue stream and its inflated worth, which, as is now the case with Facebook, could be diminished seemingly overnight.
The only problem is that, while Twitters estimated worth soared as users and investors began taking notice, its popularity, which will make its premium services viable, could also be its undoing.
Unlike other digital utilities like email and VoIP, Twitter is itself a brand. While micro-blogging allows users to spread brief, short-form information quickly and transparently, this mode of communication is still evolving and could, with the development of another method or the ascension of a competitor, be unfashionable or unnecessary even a year from now.
Then again, it seems that Twitter, despite beginning and growing through the efforts of the general public, is the perfect medium for private enterprises and marketers in general, who have perfected brief messages through years of advertising on billboards and in print.
