It's a sign of the times. Politicians are starting to use the internet as a way to connect with their constituents and also look like they aren't horribly behind the times. The most well-known example so far has been Barack Obama's successful use of YouTube during both campaign and presidency to speak to the nation. Now it appears that John McCain has learned that lesson as he has agreed to have an interview with George Stephanopoulos this Tuesday on the popular micro-blogging service Twitter.

We're assuming that they'll be using first names because a last name like Stephanopoulos can be a real liability in a 140 character conversation.

While it may sound strange at first, the Twitter interview may become a staple of politics along with many other web services as politicians and government officials try to leverage the internet to reach more people, especially the younger demographic that's more likely to be using micro-blogging services like Twitter. If this goes well, we can probably expect a lot more Twitterviews in the future.

In order to follow the interview, you'll need to sign up to follow both McCain and Stephanopoulos' Twitter feeds. Stephanopoulos is also inviting his followers to tweet questions to him that they would like asked of the former presidential candidate.
